HUNGER PROJECT

World hunger is on the increase, impacting 9.9 percent of the worldwide population. Between 2019 and 2020, the number of undernourished people increased by much to 161 million, driven by war, climate change, and the covid-19 pandemic. Over 925 million people worldwide go to bed hungry every night. Furthermore, nearly one billion people are unhoused due to a lack of sufficient housing.

WHAT INSPIRED OUR PROJECT?

When people are walking down the street and encounter the unhoused, they frequently disregard them since it is something they see all the time. Of course, we're not suggesting they should be gazed at, but when we encounter them, we should consider how we might help them rather than just passing them by. Worse, some individuals are horrified by them and try to maintain a distance. The unhoused are still humans, and we must find a way to assist them. There are millions of individuals that are food insecure. Although the focus of this project will be on the hunger of the unhoused and how we may assist them alleviate it.

HUNGER AND THE UNHOUSED

The Connection Between Hunger and The Unhoused

Food insecurity is defined as “access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life”. The unhoused is defined as “the state of not having a constant and adequate home/ residence. ”

People may connect the major cause of hunger with a lack of food resources, however poverty is now the biggest cause of hunger and poverty is also the leading cause of the unhoused.

Food insecurity patterns vary among the unhoused, depending on interactions between a variety of factors:

  • Monthly income

  • Regularity of shelter and service access

  • Substance use

  • Physical and mental health problems

  • Hunger and malnutrition

Malnutrition has also been linked to mental disorders such as depression, irritability, and weariness. These symptoms reduce people's capacity to cope with street living and may make it more difficult for them to obtain homes and support.

[ SHELTER ]

A digital mosaic art project created with images of the unhoused. A castle that consists of the unhoused, formed by unhoused, for the unhoused.

When we think of castles, we think of warm, safe, protected and sheltered.

We believe that unhoused people want a shelter; a roof over their head, a comfortable and warm place to stay, and this idea of shelter to them is as dreamy as this castle.

Facts

THE UNHOUSED FACTS

The unhoused are more likely than the average population to be food insecure. With major challenges to accessing healthful, socially acceptable food, the unhoused are nevertheless at danger of long-term food insecurity.

  • 150 million people around the world are unhoused

  • Not willing to admit they’re unhoused because of the stigma

  • Challenging to access healthcare and healthy meals

  • Exposure to risk of violence makes life on the street dangerous

FACTS

COVID-19

The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of our food distribution system worldwide with reminders that those who were experiencing food insecurity prior to the pandemic are potentially at greater risk of not only increased food insecurity but also negative physical and mental health consequences. This pandemic has intensified the issue of food availability, food safety, food distribution, and the significance of detecting flaws in our local food systems.
