Hunger for Education
We think the best way to end the hunger is through knowledge. In this project, we focus on the children in Africa. We think that education may give the opportunities to change their life.
According to UNESCO “Education is an empowering right and one of the most powerful tools by which economically and socially marginalized children and adults can lift themselves out of poverty and participate fully in society. "
Besides, some school in Africa operate school programs which include providing one meal per day. It works to ensure that children can have a nutritious meal to promote healthy growth and encourages parents to bring their children to school.
We make 4 individual works to present the connection between knowledge and hunger.
Knowledge Power Coin Bank
My work is a coin bank, and the outward appearance is an African child. It is made of some recycle stuff. Such as cups, paperboard, package of soap and wires. We can see how much coin have saved inside through its tummy, and take the coin out from its bottom.
The main idea of this work is that Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools that can switch to the better chance and better life. The way I think I can help children in Africa just donate the money, even though It’s not much enough to help all of the people who in need. I still want to try my best to help them.
Bucket of Knowledge
When I search for an inspiration, I saw lots of pictures which people use the bucket or blanket to carry their water or food and put it on their head to where they need to go. It gives me an inspiration of putting “ knowledge” in the bucket. In my opinion, I think knowledge is as important as food and water, the essential elements which keep us alive and in hope have a better life. In this project, I used the back of paper which I used to discuss design with my teacher as the person underneath and use it to weave a bucket upon the head. Inside the bucket, I put the note that I took for the design class and some shredded newspaper to symbolic the knowledge.
Power of Education
I was inspired by the traditional Chinese idiom which was 書中自有黃金屋, it means If you study hard, you will become rich. Therefore, in this work, there is lots of money and a book. However, the material of this work is paper. All of paper was the handout that the teacher gave. All the money is African currency because we concentrate on the Africa problem. Money is a sign of resources, and the book implies knowledge. That means if they have high level of knowledge, they will have more chances to change the life. In other words, they might have higher opportunities to get a great job, then change the society level. Besides, they also have the power to solve the problem of their society.
Power of Knowledge like water
Unequal distribution of resources has kept the quality of basic education in low-income countries at a low level. Due to this phenomenon, these countries suffer from severe poverty and hunger, especially child labor. If children are highly educated, in other words, they have a high level of knowledge, they have a chance to find a good job and a higher salary in the future, so that children can change the problem of hunger and poverty,
So our group will use work to demonstrate the link between education and hunger.
In my work I use plastic bottles and outer packaging to express my thoughts on hunger in Africa, I make packaging look like hungry Africans, I put them in bottles to express being trapped in hunger, education like water sending them to the water above and finding a solution to hunger
Conclusion
Education might be a long way term, but a proper schooling gives every individual a chance for a better future, a bright career and vast opportunities. The process of ending hunger might be long but we believe through education, it will bring out the most effective result in the future.
